What were the pros and cons of Chavez during his leadership of Venezuela?

Chavez was one of the most controversial leaders in the world. Admired by many in the left and vilified by those who opposed him. What were the pros and cons of his leadership? Was his leadership a good or bad one?

Chávez might blow kisses, denounce the United States, ride a bike, a tank - anything to keep the focus on him, not his performance.

Brought medical treatment for the poor

Chavez, through his agreement with Cuba, brought doctors to provide medical treatment to people who never before had access to it.

This subject about Chavez doing good by "importing" doctors from Cuba seems very odd to me. How many Americans do you know travel to Cuba to get medical attention? A country that has fallen back so many years in medical advances and knowledge in general, how could this ever be considered a good thing? Venezuelans traveled to the US to get specialized medical attention, but never to Cuba. Venezuelans have amazing doctors, very prepared and highly educated doctors (many even attending med school in the US) who due to the "importation" of incompetent and undereducated Cuban doctors, have been pushed out and lost jobs. How is this a good thing?

I have an aunt who is a pediatrician who has worked with underprivileged children almost her entire career in Venezuela. She saw her (usually free) practice almost disappear due to the Cuban doctor importation and also saw too many cases of Cuban doctors making such horrible mistakes it cost lives. How again is this a good thing?

Agree with Marialexandra.  Also, that's if you call medical treatment from Cuba "a treatment".  Also, educated doctors in Venezuela were pushed aside and their jobs were given to doctors in Cuba (whose training is mediocre).  So, the agreement did not help Venezuelan's - it's helped Cubans. That's what Chavez always did - helped others expect for his own people.

Disregard for the rule of law

He was first a leader in the coup in the early 1990s. Then, once in office, re-wrote the Constitution to fit his needs.  Even after doing so, he continued to violate this Constitution constantly. Anyone, including judges, who went against his well were punished.

Absolutely correct, Chavez effectively lead a democratic coup by quickly removing the institutions and controls that could stall his consolidation of power.  After he was able to make changes to the constitution in the late 90's, from that point on there was no governmental power that he had to answer to.  He punished those that opposed him and little by little (we always mention the analogy of boiling a lobster - start with warm water and little by little increase the temperature) attacked and destroyed freedoms in the country.
