Minimum wage discourages companies from hiring
When a company has to pay higher wages that automatically reduces the demand for more employees. If the mandatory wage is higher than the market value that the job creates then the company will maintain that position unfulfilled.

It is a more efficient and effective way to transfer money to those who need it
Minimum wage provides supplementary income to those families at the bottom of the income bracket. It is a more efficient system to getting help to these families than welfare and at the same time it encourages employment.

Most poor families lack jobs and miminum wage reduces those jobs available
There are certainly some families with dual or single minimum wage incomes that struggle to make ends meet. However, the biggest problem for the poor is the lack of jobs, not having an income at all and relying on the government for subsistence. Minimum wage certainly reduces the jobs available, especially for individuals that need any sort of income to survive.
